AJ Sankoh is a seasoned data scientist and former Senior Vice President at Sage Therapeutics. He holds a PhD in Statistics from the University at Buffalo and is a fellow of the American Statistical Association who has authored/coauthored numerous publications in peer-reviewed statistical and medical journals. Beyond his professional career, AJ has a deep-rooted passion for preserving the stories of his heritage, particularly those of his ancestors in Sierra Leone.

The Challenge We Are Addressing

The Problem: Lack of Senior Secondary School and Community Healthcare Center/Hospital.
Sierra Leone is one of the least developed countries in sub-Sahara Africa and the situation in rural Sierra Leone is beyond description. Rural communities like Munu-Thala in Kambia District are confronted with unprecedented daily living challenges such as food security, education, and healthcare. Less than 20% of age-appropriate kids are enrolled in school, and for the 1500 or so pupils in elementary schools, there is no secondary school, and no hospital in a community where a handful of motorbikes are the only means of transportation; the nearest hospital or secondary school is at least 20 miles away. A community survey conducted by MDF and Sierra Leone Action Aid International in 2023 identified the creation of a senior secondary school as the most pressing educational need, followed closely by the need for a healthcare center, food security, and safe and reliable means of transportation.

Our Mission: Community Empowerment Through Self-reliance

MDF is a recently established 501c3 non-profit organization in the USA that has been in operation in Sierra Leone as a non-governmental organization since 2022. Its primary goal is to empower people in the community by providing scholarships to secondary school and university students, supporting agricultural and feeder roads development and maintenance projects for sustainable community uplifting. Rather than relying on government, MDF promotes and supports self-reliance for food security, education, healthcare and other forms of community development projects. We invite you to join us today in bringing positive impacts through sustained development to a community that is yet to experience what it means to be living.
